The Entomological Society of China (ESC), Beijing Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology (BIME), and Guangdong Provincial CDC hosted the 4th International Forum for Surveillance and Control of Mosquitoes and Mosquito-borne Diseases and the 10th ESC’s Medical and Veterinary Entomology Congress in Guangzhou, China, May 24-28, 2015. Guangzhou was a fitting venue for the meeting as a dengue fever outbreak occurred in 2014. The meeting theme was promotion of biorational and environmental methods for control of mosquito-borne diseases. The meeting provided an opportunity to review and discuss environmental and biorational control methods for mosquito-borne diseases, future directions and challenges. Other objectives were to share information about research and management of vector mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and malaria, to update traditional methods and to promote new techniques and methods for surveillance and control of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases, to memorialize Professor Bao-Lin Lu’s contribution to the field of integrated pest management for control of vector mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases in China, and to identify possible areas of worldwide collaboration for research and development of new methods and techniques for surveillance and control of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases.

More than 50 leading scientists in the fields of mosquito surveillance and control of mosquito-borne diseases from sixteen countries were invited to give presentations in the 3 panel sessions in the morning or one of 8 sessions in the afternoon.  The 3 panel sessions included a general session including the keynote address, invited guest speakers, and a special lecture about the memorable contribution of Professor Bao-Lin Lu; a session about malaria vector biology and control, and another session about dengue fever vector biology and control. The 8 sessions included the topics of diseases and vector surveillance; taxonomy and distribution; genetics, molecular biology and physiology; behavior and ecology; personal protection and repellents; insecticides and toxicity; technology, products; and equipment, programs, legislation, professional association and other vectors. A total of 30 presentations were given in the 3 panel sessions, and more than 50 presentations given in the 8 sections. The meeting attracted about 246 attendees from 16 countries, 29 Chinese provinces, and 15 private companies achieving both national and international attention. Six participants from Florida, USA provided six presentations. Oral presentations were English only. Two projectors (one showing presentations in English and another showing presentations translated into Chinese) were used to facilitate communication. The program was printed in both English and Chinese and published on the conference website at www.mosquitoforum.net and the Asian Society of Vector Ecology and Mosquito Control (ASVEMC)’s website at asiansvemc.org . The presentations and abstracts were brought together on a single DVD that was distributed to all participants. All participants in the 1st day were photographed together in front of the hotel (Fig 1).  All international scientists and participants were invited to visit Guangzhou Provincial CDC after the meeting.

Tong-Yang Zhao (Professor and Director of the Department of Vector Biology and Control, BIME, Beijing, China) and Rui-De Xue (Director, Anastasia Mosquito Control District, St. Augustine, FL) opened the meeting and moderated the 1st panel session (Fig 2). Rui-De Xue (Fig 3) gave the conference Presidential

Address: “ Challenges and opportunity for mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease control”, Zhang (Director of the Guangzhou CDC) gave the welcome address.

William Walton (Professor & Vice Chair, Department of Entomology, UC, Riverside, CA, USA) presented the keynote address (Fig 4), “ Highlights of wetland management for control of mosquitoes”. Wu-chun Cao (Director of BIME) presented the guest speaking about “Tick-borne infectious diseases in China”. Tong-Yan Zhao gave a presentation about “Memorable contribution of Professor Bao-Lin Lu”.

At the end of the conference, Tong-Yan Zhao made some concluding remarks about the meeting’s programs and success. She expressed thanks and appreciation to the meeting hosts and organizers, funding organizations /associations, companies, hotel, all speakers, moderators, and attendees. The program committee has decided that the 5th International Forum for Surveillance and Control of Mosquito and Mosquito-borne Diseases will be held in Nanjing, China, May 28-June 1, 2017.

Also, the board meeting of the Asian Society of Vector Ecology and Mosquito Control (ASVEMC) was held in Guangzhou before the international forum. The new officers for the society were installed by Dan Kline (the President-Elect of the SOVE) prior to the international forum (Fig 5). The ASVEMC will sponsor/co-organize the 5th International Forum with the ESC, BIME, and Jiangsu Provincial CDC.
