Job Description The College of Medicine at the University of Central Florida (UCF) seeks applicants for a preeminent infectious disease investigator as the founding director of a newly established Infectious Disease Research Center of Excellence. The director is expected to provide vision and scientific leadership in infectious disease research and foster research collaborations and participation among faculty through creative policies. While any area of infectious disease research will be considered, there is a preference for a focus on the studies of vector-borne diseases or antimicrobial resistance.This is an outstanding opportunity to build a center of national prominence within the University of Central Florida, College of Medicine. Current faculty are investigating the immunology, carriage, surveillance and eradication of many pathogens including: viruses such as Zika, Dengue, Influenza, and HIV; bacteria such as Borrelia burgdorferi, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Chlamydia trachomatis, Vibrio cholera, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Clostridium difficile; and parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum. Presently, the faculty are utilizing their expertise in infectious diseases, innate and adaptive immunity, molecular biology, genetics, materials science, advanced imaging, nanotechnology, epidemiology, and population health. The health sciences campus has outstanding state-of-the-art research and clinical facilities, core laboratory resources, an advanced small animal facility, BSL-3 facilities, and mosquito breeding colonies. For clinical and translational research, it is anticipated that faculty in the center will collaborate with nearby university outpatient clinics and a university teaching hospital currently under construction, as well as clinicians and researchers at the adjacent VA Medical Center, pediatric hospital, and research institute.

The Infectious Disease Center will be based in the College of Medicine and encompass its two components, the School of Medicine and the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. Established in 2006, the UCF College of Medicine is an innovative and forward-looking medical school with a culture of collaboration and partnerships. As part of a growing “Medical City” dedicated to innovation in health and wellness, the UCF College of Medicine campus is the site of the Burnett state-of-the art research center, the fully accredited medical school, multiple clinical graduate medical education programs, UCF outpatient clinics, and the new University Teaching Hospital which is currently under construction. Nearby are the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Veterans Administration Medical Center, and Nemours Children’s Hospital. Together these partnerships provide a hub for biomedical innovation that is transforming Orlando into a global destination for health care, research, and biomedical education. The Burnett School is also located on the main UCF campus where it is ideally located for cross-discipline collaborations with researchers in physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, biology and optics.

Position Minimum Qualifications Applicants are required to have an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or a Ph.D. from an accredited institution and will qualify for hire at the tenured professor rank. The successful candidate is expected to have a demonstrated record of sustained funding in the form of multiple concurrent external awards from the NIH or equivalent agencies and a well-recognized national level reputation for research productivity.In order to be eligible for appointment as a tenured full professor of medicine upon hire, the successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of scholarly achievement, teaching experience and service commensurate with rank.
Preferences Leadership experience in basic and translational/clinical research.
